2010 THE MEASURE OF MANA guerrilla performance
Re-evaluating the supremacy of God - reminding us of the supremacy of nature.
Earth is heaven: to believe it is anywhere else is a cop-out.
Leonardo Davinci’s anatomical drawing THE VITRUVIAN MAN herald the age where the perfection of man was central to all things and encouraged progress and excellence in the individual and in society. The idea of the perfection of man and the superiority of mankind has been buried by a long list of environmental crimes and blunders in the name of progress. We ride the bulldozer with a naive excitement, feeling power over nature in the ability to manipulate the elements. We stride like fat Gods as all-mighty progress becomes dumb-downed comfort, and innocence becomes denial.
We have moved far from Leonardo’s Renaissance period where in his drawing “The Vitruvian Man”, he penned a man of perfect symmetry inside both a circle and a square. Since man is the measure of all things, four fingers make a palm, four palms make one foot, six palms make a cubit, six cubits make one man and four cubits make one pace, man falls into mathematical order. Within both a circle and a square, in two gestures spread eagle and crucifix, man becomes triangle.
The nude in art at this time (during the Renaissance) was exhibiting individuation and also recognizing a harmonizing of natural forces, following Greek philosophy where by both architecture and sculpture was based on human symmetry. From the human body, the classical derived their system of measurement.
Vitruvian man can be seen as both a celebration and also a starting point of the race to take what we own. All on earth is provided to serve humanity.we control nature. But now in post-postmodern times we find control differs greatly from power.
Times of mass celebration and spirituality should NOT be a time to forget and ignore our responsibly to the planet and to sustaining life on it. We are quick to blame government and corporations for environmental disasters, but then we jump into shop-till-you-drop-mode in the name of God.
We should stop celebrating like there was no tomorrow and begin to celebrate like there will be.
Xmas-Eve, New York. Back of a 16foot truck opens. I am on a 7foot diameter circle , spread eagleTraffic approaches me and I begin to bleed crude oilThe circle slowly turns moving the oil around the circle
As I am upside down pre-cut hair falls from my head into a 4x4ft shallow pool of salt water lined with WC paper.Upright again I stare at the oncoming trafficThe oil, hair, saltwater & movement of the truck makes a painting.
